Sister’s Strawberry Shortcake

Sister’s Strawberry Shortcake

Honey, I want you to know Sister can make the best strawberry shortcake you ever put your mouth to. It will melt right in your mouth. I wish Sister would bake me one so bad I could just die. But I’d bet you a silver dollar she will be as stubborn as an old mule. Well, you can light a torch under the mules belly and get him to trottin but I don’t think that will work for Sister. If I get me one of them strawberry shortcakes I guess I’ll have to do it my own self. I’ll write down the recipe so y’all can make one, too. I sure do hope it turns our good.

Children, I’ll tell you the truth this might not be as good as Sister’s is. Sister is a right good cook and she can make most anything taste good. She gets that from Aunt Lois. That woman could cook and I don’t mean maybe. I could just sit down at her table and eat till I run plum over. Sister was the one took after her  but I try child, I really do and sometimes my cooking turns our pretty good. Sister says I just don’t pay no attention. I put my vittles on to cook and I might run out to talk to a neighbor and forget I’ve got anything on the stove.  But I get by honey, and don’t nobody at my house goes hungry. Y’all try this one and don’t run off and forget you’ve got it in the oven. It will burn mighty quick if you ain’t got your eye on it.

 Strawberry Shortcake

First of all make you up some of them sweet biscuits. Just mix you your good biscuit batter and put some sugar in it. Mix it till it clings together, and knead it gently and quickly, lifting and folding it over. Now you can roll it our and cut out your biscuits or you can roll them out in your hands like I do.  Pop them in the oven and cook them like you always do.  If you’ve got it you can mix in some chopped pecans or almonds.

While them biscuits is cooking get them pretty plump brightly colored strawberries. If you’ve got a patch just go out and pick them off.   Wash them when you’re ready to use em. Don’t wash em and leave them setting out. Keep out the best, prettiest ones to put on top of the cake.

Now get out a jar of strawberry preserves and heat it up. Mix your cut up strawberries in the preserves.

Whip you up some cream, or buy some whipped topping.

Scrape off you some of that good orange zest and sprinkle it all over your whipped cream when you get it on your cakes, or just whip it in.

When your biscuits is cooked. Slice them open and spread a half biscuit with the strawberries and warm strawberry jam. Top  that with whipped cream and slap on the other biscuit half. Now put some whipped cream and a strawberry on top. Now child, you’ve got some good eating.  Just eat all you want and enjoy.

I have made strawberry shortcake this way before and it is wonderful, but I bet with Sisters hands on it it’s even better than mine.
